Okarito
Okarito is a small, peaceful village on the western sea coast of the South
Island. Only 13km off the main highway, Okarito is about 25 minutes drive north
of Franz Josef Glacier. Look for the turn off between Lakes Mapourika and Wahapo.
Only around 35 people live here permanently.
Services include a motel
/ backpackers and an excellent campground, managed by the local
community. For other accommodation options visit www.okarito.net.
Okarito has good weather, ocean sea beaches and forest walks, including the
renowned Okarito Trig view point.
Please bring supplies as there are no shops or banks, but we do have excellent
espresso coffee.
